The Club was started as a result of a few players asking me to start a club as they were disillusioned by their present club that played in one section with up to 24 tables and no arrow switch. They still play the same today.
So the Club was formed on the 29th September 1992.
We started life at the scouts hut in Woodmansterne with about 3 tables and struggled to keep going for some weeks before a local teacher sought room for his students to practice their bidding and play. That gave us time to develop and reach a workable number of tables.
However, the Scouts hut was not as comfortable as we would have liked and so we looked for an alternative venue. After some searching we hired the small hall called Hillcrest Halls in Clockhouse Coulsdon.
This venue lasted some time before it was condemned by the owners, The Local Authority and we had to vacate the hall while repair works were carried out. We were without a home for about 6 months but eventually got back again. It was like having to start from scratch except I had all the table and boards etc.
Soon we were up to 7 tables and the membership was increasing. After a little while longer we were occasionally having 10/11 tables when the hall could only take 9 tables comfortably. It was time to look for bigger accommodation.
Another club was at the time on the verge of being evicted from their accommodation unless they paid a very high increase in rent. So we considered amalgamating the two clubs to form a club with some 15 or so tables. This seemed a very good move for both clubs but proved equally impossible to find accommodation to suit us both so eventually we went our own ways in Merstham and this club still in Clockhouse, Coulsdon.
We were offered the Methodist Church which can accommodate 15 tables at a pinch. We took up residence on the 6th June 2000 and have not looked back since. We now regularly get 9/10 tables and occasionally reach 12.
The net result is that we have a very friendly club playing a good standard of bridge without pretending to be the best.
